Introduction

Today, many families around the world are dealing with diabetes. It is not just a disease you read about online — it becomes personal when someone in your own home is affected.

In my case, both of my parents have diabetes. My mother tries very hard to control her sugar levels. She avoids sweets, takes medicine on time, and is careful about food. But my father is different. He loves tea — not just one or two cups — sometimes many times a day, and he adds sugar. He also enjoys sweets a lot.

Even though we tell him many times to reduce sugar, he sometimes says his legs are hurting or his feet feel itchy or uncomfortable. Sometimes his fasting sugar goes very high — even around 350 or 400. Still, he continues taking medicine while also eating sweets occasionally.

Many families face similar situations. That is why understanding diabetes is very important.

What is Type 2 Diabetes?

Type 2 Diabetes is a long-term health condition where the body cannot properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that helps control sugar levels in the blood.

When the body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn’t produce enough insulin, sugar builds up in the bloodstream. Over time, this can cause serious health problems if not managed properly.

Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes and usually develops in adults, but nowadays younger people are also getting it due to lifestyle changes.

Common Causes of Type 2 Diabetes

1. Unhealthy Diet

Eating too much sugar, processed food, and unhealthy snacks can increase the risk of diabetes.

2. Lack of Physical Activity

People who do not move or exercise regularly have a higher chance of developing diabetes.

Interestingly, my father used to walk every day to our fields when we lived near our farmland. It was around 2–3 kilometers from our home. Maybe that daily walking helped him stay relatively strong even now at around 65–67 years old.

3. Family History

If someone in your family has diabetes, the risk increases.

4. Being Overweight

Extra body fat, especially around the stomach, can make it harder for the body to use insulin properly.

5. Stress and Poor Sleep

Modern lifestyle stress and lack of proper sleep also affect blood sugar levels.

Symptoms People Often Ignore

Many people ignore early symptoms of diabetes until it becomes serious.

Common symptoms include:

Frequent urination

Feeling very thirsty

Constant fatigue

Blurred vision

Slow healing wounds

Itching or burning sensation in feet

Leg pain

High sugar levels during fasting

These symptoms are common in many patients, including what I have seen in my father sometimes.

Why Controlling Sugar is Important

If diabetes is not controlled, it can lead to serious health problems such as:

Heart disease

Kidney problems

Nerve damage

Eye damage

Foot problems

Stroke

That is why doctors always recommend regular monitoring, proper diet, and medication.

Real Life Lesson from My Parents

From what I have seen at home, controlling diabetes depends a lot on discipline.

My mother is very careful. She avoids sweets and listens to the doctor. Because of this, her sugar levels are more stable.

But my father loves tea with sugar and sweets. Even though he takes medicine, controlling diet is still very important. Medicine alone is not enough.

We always try to explain to him that health is more important. Many people think, “Just one sweet will not harm,” but slowly these habits can make diabetes worse.

This is not only our story — many families experience the same situation.

Natural Ways to Help Manage Diabetes

1. Regular Walking

Even 20–30 minutes of walking daily can improve blood sugar control.

2. Reduce Sugar Intake

Cutting down sweets, sugary tea, and desserts is very important.

3. Eat Balanced Meals

Healthy foods like:

Vegetables

Whole grains

Fruits in moderation

Protein-rich foods

4. Drink More Water

Hydration helps regulate the body and metabolism.

5. Follow Doctor’s Advice

This is the most important step. Medicines must be taken exactly as prescribed.

A Message for Everyone

If someone in your family has diabetes, please support them. Sometimes older parents do not realize the seriousness of the disease.

We should encourage them with love, not force.

Also, always remember: Health is more important than temporary taste.

And if you have diabetes, please listen to your doctor and try to control diet and lifestyle.

Taking care of our parents’ health is our responsibility. Awareness, discipline, and regular checkups can make a big difference.
